Tech Scoop - April 2006

Despite that the Automatic tyre inflation system is not a brand new technology, is not well known by many people. Nowadays that the society in general has a rising concern about environmental issues, this particular technology represents a huge impact in the industry. The logistics activities impact the environment by dropping gas emissions and by consuming petrol and tyres, these effects can be reduced by the implementation of this technology. Cost reduction can be generated for the companies by reducing tire costs, preventing roadside downtime, extending tread life, increasing fuel efficiency and enabling longer maintenance intervals.

According to Aircargo an automatic tyre inflation system maker, the system checks inflation levels for each tire at the valve stem so as not to extend the tire pressure out to the hub. With the system, if a hose is leaking, the system will alert the driver and the tire will continue to fill with air and not go flat. Simply remove the bad hose and the other tires will remain serviced by the system.

One of the emerging technologies in the medical field is the Forehead Retina System. According to Siggraph, this technology consists of a small camera and 512 forehead-mounted electrodes that capture the frontal view, extract outlines, and convert the data to tactile electrical stimulation. The Forehead Retina System uses an ionic gel sheet with the same thickness and electrical impedance as the horny layer of finger skin. When the gel sheet is placed between the electrode and the forehead, stable sensation is assured.

The technology that would make possible a world tour of the band Gorillaz is called Eyeliner. This 3D technology was developed by the german Uwe Maass, who is a partial owner of Event works, a Dubai based company. An example of the performance of this technology was the appearance of Madonna and Gorillaz in the last Grammy’s ceremony, a 3D performance seen without goggles. The Eyeliner technology is a system composed by special foil screens positioned at 45 degrees on the stage and virtual image rendition software.

RFDI technology

April 12th 2006 12:18
One of the big technological advances related to the logistics field is the RFDI technology (Radio frequency identification), this technology enables the operators by using RFDI tags, to pint point the location of an item in a warehouse without having to move or to know what’s in a container without having to open it……another example is the following the life cycle of the cattle, when you have more than a thousand of cows coming and going, it becomes difficult to put together the production cycle of the calves that includes birth, feed lot, slaughter, distribution and customer. Also the data of the calf’s health can be registered and accessed through the RFDI tag.
