Chinese IT technology in trouble
May 31st 2006 12:38
There are high waves in the IT market in China, first the control of the Chinese government over the web content, second at the industry level, with the problems that the Chinese partially owned company Lenovo is facing to enter the U.S. market, and finally the most recent issue about the Chinese encryption standard WAPI that was rejected by the IEEE.
U.S. government argues that the use of Lenovo computers in sensitive activities along the United States is a threat to U.S. national security. As I see the situation this is only a excuse from the United States government to protect the interests of their own industry, there are plenty of examples of this kind of behaviour of the U.S. protectionist policies. The most sounded of these policies is the no ratification of the Kyoto protocol in order to protect their car maker industry.
In the case of the Chinese encryption standard WAPI, that is widely used in China, the IEEE favoured the 802.11i standard, this will mean a huge loss for the rising IT industry in China that would have find the acceptance of the WAPI standard as a competitive advantage to develop further technologies.
In my opinion, the first world is concern about the impact of a Chinese competition not only at the manufacturing level but at the technology development level.
