Linux hits on mobile industry

June 16th 2006 11:46

Today was announced a Linux approach to the mobile industry that is going to be carried out by major companies like Motorola, NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Samsung Electronics, and Vodafone. This Linux initiative represents a great achievement for the open source movement. The group of companies will create an independent foundation that will focus on joint development and marketing of an API specification, architecture, supporting source code-based reference implementation components and tools.

One of the main goals of this project is obviously to reduce costs but still delivering a truly valuable experience for the customer. With a Linux global platform and ecosystem, companies intend to capitalize market opportunities quicker at a lower cost with major interactivity.

The adoption of a Linux platform in the mobile industry will represent a boost for the adoption of Linux software at the PC level by means of integration.
