Microsoft’s latest patches

August 9th 2006 12:02

Microsoft has released the big guns to fix 12 holes in its Windows system and Office suit. Windows 2000 is the most vulnerable to attacks through these holes, since it’s the platform most common in corporate environments. The bug affects the “server service” that allows file sharing amongst windows systems within the same network.

Microsoft said that some of these holes can be exploited by attackers when users visit a malicious website or when checking contaminated e-mail, even through the preview pane. About the preview pane, I have some advice; deactivate that feature in your outlook since it’s the main source of contamination to your computer. The preview pane represents a serious risk since the users normally receives mails with this feature activated and accidentally open incoming mails. Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 are all vulnerable to attacks through this feature.

The patches released by Microsoft are the following:

MS06-040 - addresses a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows
MS06-041 - addresses a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows
MS06-042 - addresses a vulnerability in Internet Explorer, a component of Windows

MS06-043 - addresses a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows
MS06-044 - addresses a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows
MS06-045 - addresses a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows
MS06-046 - addresses a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows
MS06-047 - addresses a vulnerability in Microsoft Office
MS06-048 - addresses a vulnerability in Microsoft PowerPoint
MS06-049 - addresses a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows
MS06-050 - addresses a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows
MS06-051 - addresses a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows

I don't think Microsoft will ever get around this problem... as long as they're the OS of choice, hackers are going to exploit the holes..
