Mobile platforms go Open Source
August 21st 2006 13:15
The Access Linux Platform is the latest operating system created by Palm for Linux. Having Motorola backing an open source platform, the odds are that this is going to be the next big thing amongst the mobile community. Sadly PC’s and Laptops are behind in the adoption of such initiatives….in market figures. Palm and Motorola are rivals in trying to make its platform the market standard, competence is good since bring improvement to the open source field.
Palm’s objective is to make its platform the choice for mobile phones, smart phones, PDAs, video game consoles, televisions, and car navigation makers.
At the LinuxWorld, PalmSource launched the ACCESS Developer Network, a network that allows for the creation, distribution and usage of Linux applications and software designed for the ACCESS Linux Platform. To complement this development PamSource created a software library named libsqlfs complaining with a Lesser General Public License. The library helps to implement an Open Mobile Alliance-Device Management (OMA-DM) compliant registry. The library can be found here.
