PS3 bets on backward compatibility
July 11th 2006 11:02
Sony is ahead in the game console war since it announced that the new PS3 will be capable of playing all PS games available for PS1 and PS2. This should be source of concern for Microsoft and its Xbox 360 that is only able to play at this time 20 titles of the old Xbox.
The issue of backward integration will give the customers more value for money, in the case of the PS3 this is great news because of its high price. As a potential buyer this is a point that I should consider carefully not only for the buried investment in other PS version but for the possibility of ongoing sharing.
Sony put a lot pressure on its chipmaker supplier to make sure that full compatibility takes place. Microsoft claims further compatibility for the Xbox 360 but this is far from reality.
