RFID security technology

May 4th 2006 23:19

Since RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags have gain many adepts, it is crucial to develop some mechanism that assures the security of the buyers when they have left the store. Due to the fact that tags can be read from 30 feet away, the security threat is high.

EPCglobal Inc. an organization that leads the standards for RFID, developed a standard that makes the tags after purchase useless. But a problem is generated when customers happen to return a product.

To give a solution to this outcome, IBM has developed a technology called "Clipped tag" that stops the capacity of the RFID tag to transmit information but can still be read directly with an RFID reader.
