WiMax takes over the wireless world
July 10th 2006 11:34
The market of Wireless networks is going to be boosted by the introduction of Intel new technology called WiMax. With this technology the owners of mobile devices will be able to share a wireless connection point because of a link up to a single-ended wireless point. WiMax has characteristics that allow a mobile device to behave as a router. Further development of WiMax over a 802.11d protocol is required but first steps are taking place for devices using Motorola and Intel’s 802.11d chips.
The connectivity is based on the Intel’s standard proposition 802.16d or 802.16e. According to Intel the new WiMax based chip will be up to six times faster than the ones existing in the market. It is planned that in the near future this technology is likely to replace Wi-Fi.
The big challenge for Intel’s WiMax relies in the monumental work to make the Telecom companies such as SBC, Sprint, and Nokia turn from their usual suppliers to Intel and to develop a unified standard. I hope it works.
